How Do I Get a GoHighLevel API Key?
Short answer
Create a private integration token under Settings, then Private Integrations in your agency or sub-account, because HighLevel no longer creates new API keys. Choose its scopes, copy the token, and store it safely, since HighLevel shows it only once.
Checked against HighLevel’s help center on . HighLevel updates its interface often, so match the labels you see on screen.
| Feature | Private integration token | Legacy API key |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Only the scopes you choose | Full access to all account data |
| API version | API v2 | API v1, past end of support since December 31, 2025 |
| New ones | Up to 20 per agency and 20 per sub-account | Not supported for new setups, and hidden in accounts that don’t already use one |
| Upkeep | Rotate every 90 days, with a 7-day overlap | Marked Expired after 90 days unused |
Create a private integration token
- 1Open Settings, then Private Integrations in the agency or the sub-account. If it’s missing, turn the feature on in Labs.
- 2Click “Create new Integration”
- 3Give it a name and a description
- 4Select only the scopes the integration needs
- 5Copy the token and store it safely. HighLevel won’t show it again.
Send the token in the Authorization header as Bearer followed by the token, and create a separate token for each tool. Every agency admin can create tokens by default. To restrict one, edit that admin under Settings, then Team and change Roles & Permissions.
API docs and OAuth apps
- The API docs are at marketplace.gohighlevel.com/
docs, with a version switcher that includes v3 for supported endpoints - Marketplace apps get 100 requests per 10 seconds and 200,000 requests a day for each location or company
- Build an OAuth app when other accounts will install your integration. Sign up at marketplace.gohighlevel.com, go to My Apps, then Create App, add scopes, and generate a Client ID and Client Secret.
- HighLevel’s API article says the Starter and Unlimited plans include basic API access, and Agency Pro adds advanced access
- HighLevel Support doesn’t audit or debug API code. Report API bugs at developers.gohighlevel.com/
support.
Still on an old API key
Build new automations with a token next to the old ones, test them, and then turn off the old automations and delete the key. HighLevel’s migration guide says to leave live automations untouched until the new ones work.
